Who Doesn't Want to Label GMOs?

Today a family member sent me this list showing which food companies are boycotting Proposition 37, also known as the California Right to Know Act (GMO labeling). And I had to share with my readers. For those of you who know a little--or perhaps nothing at all--about what genetically modified really means, I urge you to do your due diligence as a consumer and a voter in our democracy. Genetically-modified crops and the companies developing and promoting them are just plain bad for the food system. They are creating resistant super-bugs, making livestock sick, contaminating non-GMO crops, and suing those farmers who end up with contaminated fields, etc. And there are countless studies showing serious adverse affects on the body. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine stated after their conclusive study, "GM foods pose a serious health risk...by causing damage to the various organ systems of the body." How much damage?

So while studies are showing the damaging impacts, companies are spending massive amounts of money every year trying to keep GMOs in the food system. It's about profits, and genetically altered seeds can now be owned, bringing billions to the industry giants. GM crops are much cheaper to produce, therefore many companies are behind this technology and are feeding these "damaging products" to the world's animals and humans. Eating is not optional, but what we eat and the nature of the ingredients SHOULD BE our choice. Opposers of Prop 37 don't think so. They want to "hide" the "foods that pose a serious health risk," so that we don't even realize we are eating them, branding them as healthy, whole foods. I saw a commercial the other day suggesting that Corn Flakes is a natural, wholesome, American tradition. A family was eating it, laughing and smiling at the breakfast table. Kellog says simply how it comes right from the kernel to you as you see a hand holding up a kernel. Kellog is one of the companies against GMO labeling. And corn, if not organic, is almost guaranteed at this point to be modified. Same with soy...and soy isn't great anyway! That's for another blog post...

So let me paint a realistic--and bleak--picture for you right now, which I won't do often. But it's the reality, and it's important to know. The world is getting sicker. Cancer, obesity, heart disease, and infertility are on the rise; children have plaque in their arteries for the first time ever, and childhood obesity has become an epidemic. Every year more people are on anti-depressants. More children are being born and developing along the autism spectrum, or are dealing with other severe learning disabilities. And for the first time in history our parents may outlive their children. We must look at our environment, the products we use and the food we eat. It can be our medicine or our poison. We can make a difference if we choose to by not making unconscious, convenience only-based choices. And if you live in CA, vote yes to Prop 37! Let's live healthy.
